Trip Introduction

Pikey is located in Solu Region with excellent views of high mountains. The name Pikey comes from the two titles of the Sherpas. The month of July is a time of great celebration as the locals worship their clan god, the eastern Chyabo Pikey, as Pikey hlapchen Karbu in the celebration. This trek is newly found as a trekking route. The trail passes through beautiful Sherpa village; you can visit the ancient Buddhist Monastery of Thupten Chholing and enjoy the unique Sherpa culture. It is popular for sunrise and sunset views and offers the spectacular mountains view including Mt. Everest, Thamserku, Number Chuli, Khangtega, Khatang, Kanchenjunga to the east, Manaslu, Dhaulagiri, Gaurishankar, Dorje Lakpa, Langtang himalaya. The trek can be done 3-4 days but 6 days allows exploring more villages, monasteries and physical workout without stress.

Outline Itinerary

Day 01: Drive from Kathmandu to Phaplu (2470m) – Drive. Overnight at tea house lodge.
Day 02: Trek from Phaplu to Junubeshi (2700m). Overnight at tea house lodge.
Day 03: Exploration trip to Thupten Chholing Gompa (2920m). Overnight at tea house lodge.
Day 04: Trek from Junbesi to Lamjura hill (3500m). Overnight at tea house lodge.
Day 05: Trek from Lamjura to Pikey Base Camp (3585m). Overnight at tea house lodge.
Day 06: Trek to Pikey Peak (4065m) in the morning and trek to Jhapre (2815m). Overnight at tea house lodge.
Day 07: Jhapre to Kathmandu (1400m) – Drive. Overnight at hotel.

Accommodation

We will be staying at 2/3 star hotel in Kathmandu, and in tea-houses during the trek. All rooms are on twin-shared basis. Single bedroom will be arranged on request and will cost additional. Utmost Adventure will arrange rooms with attached washrooms; however, tea-houses at some places only have shared washing and toilet facilities. Also note that single rooms are readily available in Kathmandu and in trekking regions might be difficult to find them at higher altitude.

Meals

All meals will be provided during trekking (On demand, we can arrange only breakfast during the trek and trekkers can order lunch and dinner individually from the tea-house menu). In Kathmandu, breakfast will be available. There will also be welcome and farewell dinners taking place for guests. While on trek, we have breakfast and dinner in the tea-houses/lodges where we spend the night and lunch on our way to next destination. Authentic Nepalese, Sherpa, continental meals and Indian cuisine are common choices in the menu.

Physical Condition & Experience Requirements

Pikey Trek is a moderate trek. Travelers who can walk up to 5-6 hours a day on an uphill and downhill trail will consider this trip fulfilling and enjoyable. It is a good idea to prepare for the trek by jogging and exercising regularly at least for a month prior to the start. Trekking to the Pikey should be relatively easy for those who have experience in walking/trekking in high altitudes. Determination, good physical health, positive attitude and average physical fitness are good preconditions for a successful accomplishment of the trek. Participants with pre-existing medical conditions such as heart, lung, and blood diseases should inform Utmost Adventure Trekking before booking the trek.

Best Time to Travel

The best time for trekking to Pikey Trek is during spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). The temperature is moderate and guarantees amazing views throughout the trip. Although this trek can be undertaken during winter, the cold temperature might not be suitable for everyone.

Day 01: Drive from Kathmandu to Phaplu (2470m) – Drive:

Journey starts early morning leaving Kathmandu valley to Phaplu by private 4 W Jeep which takes almost 9/10 hours driving along the Sun Koshi River. After lunch at Ghurmi we continue drive to Phaplu. Drives goes uphill continuously towards north through the sub-tropical forests of Pine to dense forests of Rhododendron passing several country side villages, beautiful Dhap village then continue to Phaplu. Overnight in Phaplu.

Day 02: Trek from Phaplu to Junubeshi (2700m):

After the breakfast, we walk down to Phaplu which takes approx. 5 hours. The trail is gently downhill along the small stream and can enjoy delicious local food, passing by beautiful Sherpa villages. Stay overnight in Junbeshi.

Day 03: Exploration trip to Thupten Chholing Gompa (2920m):

Morning after breakfast, we take day hike to Thupten Chholing Gompa (2920m) for round trip 3/4 hours. The trail goes along Junbesi Khola with gentle climbing up hill. It was founded in 19th Century and practiced by Tibetan Buddhism. You may enjoy the meditation with local nuns and monks in the Monastery and explore the village. Overnight in Junbeshi.

Day 04: Trek from Junbesi to Lamjura hill (3500m):

Another beautiful day starts crossing Junbesi Khola and climb uphill. From the top we can witness the spectacular view of Everest, Thamserku, Kantega and Mera Peak. After passing Ringmo Khola the trail climbs uphill to Ringmo Village. After Ringmo you will climb Lamjura La Pass (3500m) a superb example of Sherpa architecture. Now you will trek one hour uphill to Lamjura top for best views of Everest including other peak near Everest region. Overnight in Lamjura.

Day 05: Trek from Lamjura to Pikey Base Camp (3585m):

After the breakfast we start walking to the Pikey Base camp. The trail stays on the ridge with up and down to arrive Jase Bhanjyang (3550m) and continue walk through beautiful Rhododendron and Pine forest. We arrive at Pikey Base camp. Overnight at basic teahouse lodge.

Day 06: Trek to Pikey Peak (4065m) in the morning and trek to Jhapre (2815m):

Early morning we climb steep uphill until reaching Pikey Peak which takes about an hour. It offers amazing sunrise view over the Himalayas and the spectacular mountains view including Mt. Everest, Thamserku, Number Chuli, Khangtega, Khatang, Kanchenjunga to the east, Manaslu, Dhaulagiri, Gaurishankar, Dorje Lakpa, Langtang himalaya. Then trek start downhill through the Pine and Rhododendron forest with amazing mountain views to the Lamuje, after lunch break we continue walk to Jhapre via Bhulbule village, you find centuries old monasteries, Buddhist stapes and Mani stones. The yak herding can be seen at different places. Overnight at teahouse lodge.
